The Story Behind 23rd Hour

One question we get asked often is "Why 23rd Hour?"

Soon after I moved to the Bay Area, I went to an open mic night to play and get to meet local musicians. I loved George's set so I went up to him and asked: "do you ever collaborate with people on your songs, and if so, would you be interested in collaborating with me?". He lied and said yes to both. We got together for a jam and realized we had no songs in common. He knew jazz, classic rock, folk, anything up to the 70s and I knew mostly classical music, Mauritian Sega, and hits from the 90s onwards.

It was a very intriguing jam session, so we had another one, and another one, and another one. Soon, we realized that despite our musical differences, we actually have very similar affinities for lyrics, arrangements, melodies and "sound" in general. On paper, we could hardly be more different. Yet we found that we had very compatible personalities despite being from different countries, cultures, age groups, professional backgrounds and musical genres. Soon, we were getting together every chance we got. One weekend, we jammed for 23 hours straight, minus short breaks for food and power naps. After 23 hours of jamming, busking, and recording, we decided to start writing a song inspired by the night we just had. "Perfect Strangers" pretty much wrote itself. And thus, on the 23rd Hour was born our first song. It was official, we were a band!
