As I was writing my first songs, I was listening to “Drops of Jupiter”, “Eggplant”, “Get To Me”, “Meet Virginia” and many of the early Train records. I loved the raw acoustic sound, and how that allowed the vocals to truly shine. I loved what I felt was the perfect balance between the common chord progression and the two or three unexpected chords that just elevated the chorus to another level. The lyrics were also different; they were funny and wordier than most people would have recommended, but they worked. Train, Drops of Jupiter and My Private Nation really made me appreciate the craft of songwriting at a time when I was just discovering my own ability to write songs. I can still remember being on my twin bed with my guitar, trying to figure out the chords to Counting Airplanes wondering if I’ll ever be able to make a record that was as good. I was living on a small island in the Indian Ocean. The very idea of going to a studio seemed laughable. Words cannot express how much it means to me, 14 years later, to have shared this conversation with the guy who wrote the music that first inspired me to pursue the elusive muse.
